BP Gas — Oil Hydrotreater (GOHT)

This gas oil hydrotreater (GOHT) was part of a $320 million heavy crude refinery modernization project for the BP petrochemical refinery in Whiting, Ind. A hydrotreater removes sulfur from fuel, making it cleaner. Our work included structural steel, millwright equipment setting and precision alignment, piping, electrical, instrumentation, painting, insulation and fireproofing. 

Project Highlights 

Surpassed 2.8 million man-hours of work self-performed and managed by MC Industrial without a lost time injury. As a result, MC Industrial was awarded the National Maintenance Agreements Policy Committee (NMAPC) Zero Injury Safety Award. 

Single largest lump-sum labor contract ever executed by BP in North America. Our workforce was more than 1,600 at its peak. 

Project scope included the installation of electrical, insulation, heat trace, process vessels, piping and associated mechanical equipment. 

Managed the turnover process to the owner, which involved 98 systems consisting of all subcontractor quality documents and records. 

To ensure sequential work activities did not proceed without proper documentation and quality sign-off, the project team conceived, developed and implemented an elaborate tracking process, integrating quality document sign-off with productivity tracking. This tracking system — integrated with the BIM model to aid in work planning for all trades — is now regarded as the backbone to productivity, schedule and quality adherence on projects. 

It was an extremely important project for MC Industrial and McCarthy and the incredible work led to the Roger Burnet Award, the highest company project award given annually by McCarthy. It is presented to the team embodying the finest in integrity, personal service and commitment to quality.
