This state-of-the-art outpatient cancer clinical care and research facility is the largest project ever undertaken by UCSD Health Sciences. The project consisted of a three-story structural steel clinical services/administrative building and a five-story cast-in-place research laboratory tower, with an atrium and bamboo courtyard connecting the buildings together.
The 273,188-square-foot facility is the region's only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, and one of 39 nationwide. It was the first Cancer Center in the world to provide all outpatient care and research within one facility.
The building’s exterior integrates six different finishes, including iridescent, acid-etched, stainless steel shingles; plaster; metal panels; pre-cast concrete; stone; and curtainwall. The Cancer Center also incorporates, as part of its mechanical system, the first two thermal fluid heaters (TFH) ever used in San Diego County.
