Exploring STEM Through Construction
Students from all over Orange County enjoyed a fun day of exploring STEM with a free interactive workshop.
McCarthy hosted an Exploring STEM Through Construction event on May 18, 2024, at the Newport Beach office. Over 60 students from all over Orange County enjoyed a fun day of exploring STEM with a free interactive workshop that created opportunities for students to learn about construction firsthand.
The event was open to high school students ages 14 – 18, with a special emphasis on introducing girls to the trades and possibilities that exist within the construction industry. The event was centered around fostering a safety-first mentality and boosting self-confidence - skills that apply to everyday life. Students met some of McCarthy’s industry leaders while participating in a variety of safe, expert-guided, hands-on experiences from heavy equipment operation to drywall, concrete, plumbing, drone flying, and virtual reality.
The day opened with welcomes by the McCarthy crew, breakfast and a Flex & Stretch. Pods of 8-10 high school girls rotated throughout these stations spending around 45 minutes at each. Seven trade partners provided experiential learning opportunities, fun and practical giveaways.
